Expanding Into Urban Markets
Dick’s Sporting Goods has opened its first House of Sport location in the New York City metropolitan area, choosing Jersey City’s Newport Centre Mall for the 85,000-square-foot flagship. The location represents the retailer’s second urban House of Sport, following the Boston Prudential Center opening.
“This is our second urban House of Sport location, and we could not pass up the opportunity to be so close to Manhattan,” said Toni Roeller, executive vice president of store experience and design. The Jersey City location offers multiple transportation options for NYC-area customers, including light rail, ferry, and subway access.
At 85,000 square feet, the Jersey City store marks the smallest House of Sport footprint to date, compared to the typical 100,000-plus square feet of suburban locations. Despite the reduced size, the store maintains the concept’s signature blend of premium retail and interactive experiences.
Footwear Focus and Interactive Experiences
The Jersey City location dedicates significant space to footwear, carrying 13,000 unique SKUs across 7,200 square feet, plus an additional 4,000 SKUs in the dedicated “House of Cleats” section. The selection spans major brands including Nike, Adidas, Jordan, Under Armour, and emerging brands like On and Skims.
“Whether you’re a sneakerhead, runner, or commuter, this store offers a selection you won’t find anywhere else,” Roeller explained.
Interactive elements include a climbing wall, multiple golf bays equipped with TrackMan simulators, and a multi-sport cage designed for baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer, and field hockey. These features allow customers to test equipment while measuring performance metrics.
Community Engagement Strategy
The grand opening weekend featured appearances by basketball Hall of Famer Sue Bird, MLB legend Alex Rodriguez, and NBA All-Star Karl Anthony Towns. District Manager Nate Jones emphasized the community-focused approach.
“We see a vibrant community in Jersey City that has a lot of families that are interested in sport, and we know the sport changes lives,” Jones said. “We’re here to support the community in recreational sport, in high school sport, college sport, whatever the athlete needs.”
The store plans to host team-specific displays around major sporting events and coordinate activations with local colleges during football season and other key periods.
Aggressive Expansion Timeline
As of September 22, 2025, Dick’s operates 26 House of Sport locations nationwide, with approximately 16 new openings scheduled for 2025. Recent launches include stores in Miami, Dallas, Baton Rouge, Dayton, and Polaris, Ohio. Upcoming openings are planned for Durham, N.C.; Glendale, Ariz.; San Antonio, Texas; Mobile, Ala.; and Freehold, N.J.
The company has set an ambitious target to operate between 75 and 100 House of Sport locations by the end of fiscal 2027, representing significant acceleration from the current pace.
Strategic Market Positioning
The Jersey City location allows Dick’s to test urban market dynamics while serving the dense NYC metropolitan population. The company applied lessons learned from the Boston urban location to optimize the Jersey City format and layout.
The timing coincides with increased focus on experiential retail, as traditional sporting goods retailers compete with direct-to-consumer brands and online marketplaces. The House of Sport concept positions Dick’s as a destination for product testing and community engagement rather than simple transaction-based shopping.
