Key Takeaways
- Maryland awarded a $500,000 grant to the Mimi DiPietro Family Skating Center, a 40-year-old public rink in Baltimore’s Patterson Park
- The funding targets the rink’s pumping room foundation, which is critical to keeping the ice surface operational
- The Baltimore Banners, a youth hockey program serving kids from historically Black neighborhoods, depends on the facility as its home rink
- State Senate President Bill Ferguson framed the grant as a five-year bridge to a longer-term facility investment
- The rink’s nearest alternative, Mount Pleasant Ice Arena, is a 20-minute drive from the East Baltimore communities the Banners serve
A Lifeline for a Facility at Risk
The Mimi DiPietro Family Skating Center in Baltimore’s Patterson Park is getting a financial reprieve. Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson announced a $500,000 state grant during the Baltimore Banners’ annual “Bridge the Gap” game on March 14, calling the rink “an incredible unique asset” for the surrounding community.
The grant addresses immediate infrastructure concerns at the four-decade-old facility. Specifically, the funds could cover repairs to the pumping room foundation, the system responsible for keeping the ice frozen. Without that fix, the rink’s operational future is uncertain.
Ferguson, who lives near the park, described the grant as a runway rather than a permanent fix. “The hope is that this gives us the five years of runway so that we can make sure that the next investment, the next DiPietro rink 2.0, is even better than this incredible space today,” he said.
What the Rink Means for the Baltimore Banners
The grant carries direct implications for the Baltimore Banners, a youth hockey team run by the Tender Bridge Foundation. The program draws players from historically Black neighborhoods in East Baltimore, with volunteer coaches providing transportation to and from the rink.
When the DiPietro Center is unavailable, the Banners practice at Mount Pleasant Ice Arena in Reisterstown, roughly 20 minutes away. That commute creates a real access barrier for a program built around removing them.
“It’s our home. This is where we started this program,” said Banners coach Jack Burton. “It’s the place that brings us together and the reason that we have such a tight bond and a close community.”
The Banners’ “Bridge the Gap” game, now in its seventh year, has become a rallying point for the program’s alumni and supporters. Earl Thomas, one of the team’s original players and now a 31-year-old business owner, returned for the event. He credited the program with keeping him and his peers engaged during adolescence. His younger brother Ian went on to become an NFL draft pick at tight end in 2018.
The Broader Facility Access Question
Baltimore’s situation reflects a challenge playing out across youth sports: aging public facilities that serve as the only realistic access point for underserved communities. When those facilities degrade, the programs that depend on them face an existential threat, not because of demand or coaching, but because of concrete and compressors.
The $500,000 grant buys time, but the longer-term question remains. Ferguson’s framing of a “DiPietro 2.0” suggests the state recognizes that a full rebuild or replacement may eventually be necessary. For the Banners and the families who rely on the rink, the next five years will determine whether that vision becomes reality.
