Team USA made a statement on Saturday in Los Angeles. At the inaugural Fanatics Flag Football Classic, the national flag football squad ran through two rosters loaded with NFL talent, outscoring opponents 106-44 across three games and winning the championship 24-14 over Joe Burrow’s Wildcats FFC.
The event, held at BMO Stadium after being relocated from Riyadh due to the Iran war, served as a preview for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where flag football will make its debut as an Olympic sport (Reuters).
Team USA Scored on Nearly Every Possession
The dominance was thorough. Team USA scored on every offensive possession across all three games, with only one kneel-down before halftime as the exception. Velton Brown Jr. and quarterback Darrell “Housh” Doucette led the way, using speed and elusiveness that NFL players simply could not contain (CBS Sports).
Tom Brady, now 48, opened the day with a highlight-reel touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs in the corner of the end zone on his first competitive snap in over 1,000 days. He followed that with a two-point conversion to Rob Gronkowski, who later exited with a hamstring injury (ESPN).
But Brady’s Founders FFC fell 43-16 to Team USA and were eliminated in round-robin play after losing to the Wildcats 34-26.
NFL Players Struggled With the Rules
A recurring theme throughout the day: NFL players could not adjust to the flag game. Penalties piled up, most stemming from illegal physicality or blocking violations. Players also had difficulty pulling flags off Team USA ball carriers.
Team USA head coach Jorge Cascudo acknowledged the gap after the final. He told reporters that his players had familiarity with the format that the NFL rosters simply did not, though he cautioned that the gap may not last long (Reuters).
What This Means for the 2028 Olympic Roster
Saturday raised a real question about how Team USA’s Olympic roster should be built. The current flag football national team was clearly the superior unit. But incorporating NFL names could help grow the sport’s global profile.
Of the NFL players on the field, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels and Philadelphia Eagles receiver DeVonta Smith stood out as the most natural fits for Olympic consideration. Daniels has a flag football background and his hip movement mirrored what Team USA players were doing. Smith hauled in multiple touchdowns and showed strong awareness in the format (CBS Sports).
What This Means for Youth Flag Football
Events like Saturday’s Classic do not exist in a vacuum. They land in a youth sports market where flag football is already the fastest-growing team sport in the country.
According to the Aspen Institute’s Project Play 2025 report, flag football was the only team sport tracked by SFIA that saw consistent growth in regular participation among kids ages 6-17 between 2019 and 2024 (Project Play). An estimated 7.8 million Americans played flag football in 2024, with preteen players driving the numbers, per Sportico (Sportico). Girls’ flag football participation at the high school level has climbed roughly 388% since the first post-pandemic NFHS survey, with nearly 1,000 schools adding programs between 2023-24 and 2024-25 (i9 Sports).
The 2028 Olympics are already accelerating that growth. NFL FLAG now operates more than 1,800 leagues across all 50 states, serving over 830,000 participants (NFL FLAG). With Saturday’s event putting flag football on national television alongside names like Brady, Burrow, and Beckham, the visibility boost will reach the parents and kids who are already signing up in record numbers.
For the youth sports industry, the signal is clear: flag football is not a niche anymore. It is a participation sport with Olympic legitimacy, NFL investment, and a rapidly growing infrastructure. Saturday was another proof point.
