In 2024, XTERRA launched its groundbreaking Youth Tour, designed to cultivate the next wave of world-class off-road triathletes. With over 40 events worldwide, this innovative program connects young athletes to the exhilarating world of cross-triathlon, offering a structured competitive path for curious newcomers and those seeking to build positive relationships within a vibrant outdoor community.
A Global Platform for Rising Stars The XTERRA Youth Tour provides a unique, standardized global platform for athletes aged 14-19. Building on XTERRA’s successful World Cup, the Youth Tour serves as a natural stepping stone to the more demanding Full Distance races of the XTERRA World Tour. Success stories like Sullivan Middaugh (USA), who claimed the XTERRA USA Championship at 18, exemplify the need for this dedicated youth series.
Safer Training, Stronger Community By engaging youngsters early in the off-road community, the Tour offers a safer alternative to on-road training, which often comes with traffic hazards. Moreover, it provides invaluable opportunities for building self-esteem within a niche sport, allowing participants to stand out among their peers.
A Fresh Alternative to Mainstream Sports In an era where mainstream sports are fiercely competitive from an early age, off-road triathlon presents a refreshing alternative. It offers a less saturated arena for young athletes who may have experienced burnout from years of early specialization in other sports.
Youth Divisions and Qualifying for the World Stage The Tour features three age divisions:
- Youth A (14-15 years): Super Sprint distances
- Youth B (16-17 years): Sprint distances
- Junior (18-19 years): Sprint distances
Every race within the Tour serves as a qualifier for the XTERRA Youth World Championship in Trentino, Italy, providing unprecedented international exposure.
Building a Lifelong Community Beyond competition, the XTERRA Youth Tour fosters a thriving community. Young athletes interact with elite triathletes, sharing trails and experiences that inspire growth both on and off the race course, promoting lifelong engagement with cross-triathlon.
