- Playground Productions CEO Lindsay Barnett executive produces and voices multiple characters in the project
Playground Productions has released the trailer for “Backyard Sports: The Animated Special,” a 11-minute animated event bringing the classic youth sports gaming franchise back to screens with Hollywood talent and updated animation. The special premieres exclusively on the Backyard Sports YouTube channel on January 29, 2026.
Hollywood Talent Joins Classic Characters
The voice cast includes comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish as Kiesha Phillips, alongside Donald Faison (Scrubs) as Dante Robinson and Ego Nwodim (Saturday Night Live) as Stephanie “Bubbles” Morgan and Jocinda Smith. The roster also features Chris Mintz-Plasse as Dmitri Petrovich, Adam Pally as Pete Wheeler, Utkarsh Ambudkar as Achmed Khan, and Arturo Castro as fan-favorite Pablo Sanchez.
Lindsay Barnett, CEO of Playground Productions, serves as both executive producer and voice actor, playing Vinnie and the Webber Twins in the special.
Animation Veterans Lead Production
The special is directed by Mike Roberts, whose credits include “Final Space” and “BoJack Horseman,” with writing by Joe Purdy of “Hey Arnold!” fame. Lighthouse Studios handles animation production, the same team behind “Rick and Morty,” “Bob’s Burgers The Movie,” and “The Cuphead Show.”
Executive producers include Chris Waters, Lindsay Barnett, Avi Savitski, and Ari Pinchot, with Phil Crain serving as Line Producer. Jonny Shorr composed the original music for the special.
Plot Centers on Pre-Game Crisis
The special follows team superstar Stephanie “Bubbles” Morgan as she loses her lucky bubble gum just 30 minutes before game time at Steele Stadium. The Backyard kids launch a time-sensitive mission to recover it and save their season. The storyline brings back classic characters including Pablo Sanchez, Kiesha Phillips, Achmed Khan, and others with updated animation while maintaining the humor and charm of the original games.
Latest Step in Franchise Revival
The animated special represents another phase in Playground Productions’ efforts to revive the Backyard Sports brand. The original Backyard Baseball launched for PC in 1997, and Switch owners gained access to the game in June 2024. The animated format allows the franchise to reach audiences beyond gaming platforms, leveraging the YouTube distribution model to connect with both nostalgic fans and new viewers.
The production quality and talent attached to the project signal a substantive investment in the IP revival, moving beyond a simple game re-release to expand the brand into entertainment content.
