Addressing a Regional Turf Field Gap
Columbus Recreation and Parks is nearing completion on Kilbourne Run Sports Park, a comprehensive redevelopment designed to address what local operators identify as a shortage of tournament-grade turf fields in Central Ohio.
The renovated 60-acre facility in Northland will feature six full-size artificial turf fields and eight natural turf fields when it opens in spring 2026. Project manager Kelly Messer confirmed in November that most infrastructure, including turf fields, playgrounds, shelters, parking, and facilities, is complete and on budget.
“Columbus has been a little short on turf complexes. They’ve relied primarily on grass fields for anything from league play to event hosting,” Costa Kalorides, managing director of Club Ohio, told Axios. “I think there’s been a massive push to build some of these complexes.”
The renovation replaces an older facility that Messer described as a “prime soccer facility” before 2022, but one that suffered from poor field quality and drainage issues that left surfaces waterlogged. The city invested $30 million in the project, with an additional $10 million from the Columbus Crew.
Columbus Crew Partnership Origins
The Crew’s financial involvement stems from failed joint plans with the city to purchase state-owned land near the fairgrounds for a different project. When that acquisition didn’t materialize, the team redirected its investment to the Kilbourne Run redevelopment.
This public-private partnership model is becoming more common in youth sports infrastructure, where municipalities seek to share financial risk while professional teams gain community engagement opportunities and potential development pathways.
The facility’s “Championship Field” includes a stadium with robust lighting, team locker rooms, a press box, and expanded spectator capacity. These amenities position the complex for higher-level tournaments and showcases that drive significant economic impact.
Tournament Economics and Market Growth
The investment reflects broader economic trends in youth soccer. US Youth Soccer registers nearly 2.5 million competitive youth players annually, including affiliates in the Ohio Soccer Association. According to marketing firm For Soccer, more than 14 million Americans ages 6 and older played soccer in 2023, representing a 23% increase from 2018.
Youth sports represent an estimated $43 billion annual industry, with typical families spending more than $1,000 on their child’s primary sport. Youth soccer tournaments generate substantial revenue through registration fees, hotel stays, dining, and related spending.
Messer stated the park is designed to make Columbus a “regional leader” in club soccer, providing economic opportunities and enhancing Central Ohio’s sports reputation. Adult recreational play is also expanding, adding another revenue stream for facilities that can accommodate multiple demographics.
Crews are completing work this month on a roundabout at Westerville Road and Westerville Woods Drive that will serve as the park’s main entrance. Interior building work and restrooms will be finished over the winter. Natural grass fields require additional growing time and will open next fall.

Geographic Positioning and Market Timing
Kalorides highlighted Columbus’s strategic location as a competitive advantage for tournament hosting. “Columbus is kind of the perfect geographical location. It bridges Ohio very well, but it’s also a nice meeting point for Pittsburgh, Indiana, Michigan, and Kentucky,” he said.
The facility’s opening coincides with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across North America. “This complex will open up with a new World Cup coming in 2026. So the timing is very good,” Kalorides noted.
If demand materializes as projected, Kilbourne Run could replicate the success of Lou Berliner Sports Park, which has become a regional destination for baseball and softball tournaments. The city aims to diversify its sports tourism portfolio while serving local club soccer programs that previously lacked adequate turf field access.
Facility Development as Competitive Strategy
The Kilbourne Run project reflects a common pattern in youth sports markets where facility control influences tournament hosting, team placement, and revenue generation. Operators with modern turf complexes can accommodate year-round programming regardless of weather conditions, a significant advantage over grass-only facilities.
Central Ohio’s club soccer community has grown despite limited infrastructure, creating pent-up demand that new facilities like Kilbourne Run are designed to capture. The question for Columbus will be whether the park can attract enough regional tournaments and maintain sufficient year-round programming to justify the $40 million investment.
With 14 fields total and championship-level amenities, the complex has the physical assets required for major events. Success will depend on effective marketing, competitive pricing, and building relationships with tournament directors, college coaches, and club soccer organizations across the region.
