Jordan Smith Jr. Caps a Historic Run at Paul VI Catholic
Jordan Smith Jr., a 6-foot-2 shooting guard from Paul VI Catholic in Washington, DC, has been named the 2025-26 Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Smith is a Five-Star Plus+ recruit ranked No. 2 nationally and No. 1 among shooting guards per the Rivals Industry Rankings.
His senior season numbers were a strong argument for the award: 26.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 3.2 steals per game, while shooting 56 percent from the field and 37 percent from three. The Panthers finished 34-2, claimed the No. 1 ranking in the Rivals National 2025 High School Boys Basketball Composite, and won their fourth consecutive VISAA state championship.
Over his four-year career at Paul VI Catholic, Smith helped the program go 126-15. He is also the 2025-26 Naismith High School Boys Basketball Player of the Year. He is committed to Arkansas.
Olivia Vukosa Brings a Complete Game to UConn’s Incoming Class
Olivia Vukosa, a 6-foot-5 post player from Christ the King in New York, was named the 2025-26 Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year. The two-time Gatorade New York Girls Basketball Player of the Year (2024-25, 2025-26) averaged 17.8 points, 18.1 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 4.4 blocks per game this season, leading Christ the King to a 22-6 record and the CHSAA state championship game.
Vukosa is ranked No. 3 in the Class of 2026 by ESPN, is a McDonald’s All-American Game selection, and is a finalist for the 2026 Naismith Award. She was also named to the 2026 Naismith Girls’ High School All-America Second Team.
Her resume extends to the international level. Vukosa made her Senior National Team debut earlier this month at the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket Qualifiers representing Croatia, where she averaged 11.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. She played for the Croatian U20 team last summer.
Vukosa becomes the 12th UConn player in program history to earn the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year award, joining a list that includes Breanna Stewart, Paige Bueckers, and Maya Moore.
Two Awards That Track the Talent Pipeline Heading into 2025-26
The Gatorade Player of the Year awards in basketball are among the most closely watched recruiting and recognition benchmarks in high school sports. Both Smith and Vukosa represent the top end of a talent pool entering programs built for national competition. For youth sports operators, coaches, and brand partners tracking athlete development and recruitment trends, these selections reflect where elite high school basketball talent is flowing and which development pipelines are producing at the highest level.
