IMG Academy’s boys National Basketball team will compete in the NBA Academy Showcase in Abu Dhabi from September 25 to 27. The tournament takes place several days before the 2025 NBA Abu Dhabi Games.
The Ascenders will face three international basketball programs during the showcase. Their opponents include Centre of Excellence from Australia, NBA Academy from Africa, and INSEP from France. All teams feature top high school-age players from their respective regions.
This international competition aligns with IMG Academy’s mission to grow sports globally. The opportunity allows student-athletes to experience different cultures while competing at a high level abroad.
Mike Gillian, Director of Basketball at IMG Academy, spoke about the invitation: “At IMG Academy, we are always seeking opportunities for our student-athletes to expand their horizons, embrace new cultures, and connect with people from around the world. I could not be prouder of our Boys National Basketball Team for earning the invitation to compete at the NBA Academy Showcase in Abu Dhabi.”
Gillian emphasized the global nature of basketball today. “Facing three international opponents underscores just how global the game of basketball has become, and we are honored to be part of a tournament that is not only growing the sport worldwide, but also elevating IMG Academy’s brand on the global stage.”
International travel for competition is standard across IMG Academy’s sports programs. Nearly every team at the academy has opportunities to compete abroad while representing the school.
The NBA Academy Showcase provides IMG Academy’s basketball players with exposure to international competition and different playing styles. The tournament serves as both a competitive opportunity and a cultural exchange for participating athletes.
