Department Growth Tied to Regional Sports Infrastructure
IU Indianapolis has expanded its Tourism, Event and Sport Management Department due to popularity of the sports and event management industry in Indianapolis and surrounding areas. David Pierce, sport management professor and department chair, cited facilities like Grand Park in Westfield and the Fishers Event Center as drivers of growth.
The department offers four majors: event management, tourism, hospitality and sport management. Pierce noted the location advantage for students seeking industry experience.
“A downtown location, specifically Indianapolis, that has built their economic development strategy on tourism and sports for the last 40 years. It’s not just an urban market, it’s the Indy market that has put a priority on that,” Pierce said.
Youth Sports Creates New Career Paths
Pierce highlighted the emergence of youth sports as a viable career option for students.
“Ten years ago, you would not have walked into a classroom and told students on day one of the intro class that youth sports is a career path. That would be insane. But now, some of the better paying jobs out there are in that space,” Pierce said.
He described youth sports as “an ecosystem and an industry that didn’t exist 10 years ago.” Grand Park in Westfield serves as a key component of the regional youth sports infrastructure.
Industry Partnerships Support Student Experience
The program maintains partnerships with Visit Indy and the Indiana Sports Corp. The Indiana Sports Corp, formed in 1979, was the first commission of its kind in the nation. Since then, more than 300 cities have created their own sports organizations.
Students can attend morning classes and work event shifts at major competitions like the Final Four. The Indiana Sports Corp hosts championship events and has expanded to include sports entertainment events like WWE and the Olympic Swim Trials.
The hospitality program includes a co-op program with White Lodging, which operates the JW Marriott in downtown Indianapolis.
Graduate Employment and Faculty Experience
Pierce reported that 70 percent of students who graduate with degrees in tourism, events and sport management secure jobs in their field. Most graduates remain in central Indiana after completion.
Faculty includes the former Indiana Director of State Tourism, event planning professionals, former collegiate athletic directors and instructors who work in tourism and marketing sectors like Visit Indy.
“There are contacts and networking opportunities available at every corner,” Pierce said.
