Key Takeaways
- Division I Cabinet approved up to two additional commercial logos on uniforms and one on equipment starting August 1, 2025
- Patches limited to 4 square inches each and restricted to non-NCAA championship competition including regular season and conference championships
- Cabinet chair Josh Whitman stated the decision reflects Division I’s commitment to drive additional revenues to fund student-athlete benefits
- Playing rules committees will determine specific placement restrictions to avoid interference with officiating
- NCAA staff exploring potential policies for commercial patches during NCAA Championships in collaboration with corporate partners
New Revenue Opportunity for Division I Programs
The NCAA Division I Cabinet voted Friday to permit athletics programs to add commercial logos and patches to team uniforms, equipment, and apparel for all non-NCAA championship competition. The policy change takes effect August 1, 2025.
Under the new rules, Division I teams can display up to two additional commercial logos on uniforms and apparel, plus one additional logo on equipment during preseason and regular season games. Conference championship events allow for one extra commercial logo on uniforms and apparel beyond regular season limits.
Each logo is capped at 4 square inches maximum.
Cabinet Links Decision to Student-Athlete Benefits
Josh Whitman, athletics director at Illinois and chair of the Division I Cabinet, connected the policy change directly to funding increased benefits for student-athletes.
“College sports are in an exciting new era of increased financial benefits for student-athletes, and the Cabinet’s vote today reflects the ongoing commitment of Division I members to drive additional revenues and fully fund those benefits,” Whitman said in a statement.
Implementation Details and Restrictions
Playing rules subcommittees, oversight committees, and sport committees for National Collegiate championships will establish specific placement guidelines for the commercial patches. Logos must be positioned outside designated uniform sections required for officiating purposes.
The decentralized approach allows each sport to determine appropriate placement standards while maintaining visibility of required uniform markings.
NCAA Championships Remain Under Review
Regular season and conference championship competitions now permit commercial patches under the new policy. NCAA Championship events maintain current branding restrictions.
NCAA staff is exploring policies that could allow commercial patches during championship play. Any championship policy changes would require coordination with the NCAA’s existing corporate marketing partners and media rights holders.
Expanded School and Conference Autonomy
Whitman described the policy change as part of a broader NCAA approach to reduce centralized rule-making.
“This also continues the NCAA’s efforts to expand flexibility in areas of NCAA rules, thereby allowing schools and conferences to set standards that reflect their values and serve their unique needs,” Whitman said. “This important policy change is another step forward in advancing that philosophy and providing members with increased flexibility.”
Schools and conferences can now pursue commercial patch partnerships independently under the new framework.
