Corporate Community Impact
More than 200 Cigna Group volunteers rolled up their sleeves this week in Franklin, Tennessee, transforming raw materials into summer essentials for local kids. The team assembled hundreds of jump ropes, inflated dozens of basketballs, and constructed furniture pieces destined for Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee.
Key highlights from the July 10th volunteer event:
🏀 Hundreds of jump ropes assembled for active play
⚽ Dozens of basketballs inflated and ready for games
🪑 Furniture built to refresh club facilities
👥 200+ corporate volunteers participating during work hours

The volunteer event represents part of Cigna’s broader youth wellness commitment. The company announced a $9 million, three-year initiative last year to support youth mental health and well-being. Employee volunteerism is a key component of this effort, providing company-led opportunities during the workday to aid area youth.
“It’s critically important that we provide kids and teens with opportunities to develop healthy habits at a young age because they will then be much more likely to have stronger health and vitality throughout their adulthood,” said Melissa Skottegaard, head of community programs and board chair of The Cigna Group Foundation.
For the Boys & Girls Clubs, the timing works well. CEO Eric Higgs noted that the sports equipment will help kids “build strength, bolster their motor skills, as well as develop their socialization skills,” while the furniture arrives as the organization refreshes its Preston Taylor Club for the upcoming school year.
The corporate volunteer approach provides employees with meaningful engagement opportunities during work hours, while community organizations receive both resources and labor. As participating volunteer Dina Kraus put it, “Giving back while also spending time with colleagues always puts a smile on my face. I’m picturing these kids using the jump ropes and playing with the basketballs, and I know it’s going to bring them joy. It’s really meaningful how our company incorporates volunteerism into the normal fabric of our jobs.”
