October 17th, 2025 – Stories of resilience, preservation, and dreams that span continents from our friends at GoFundMe.
This week’s Feel Good Friday showcases the extraordinary power of sports communities to rally around their own. From a paralyzed football player making miraculous progress to undefeated champions facing financial barriers, these stories remind us that the bonds formed through youth sports extend far beyond any playing field. When tragedy strikes or opportunity knocks, these communities prove that supporting young athletes is about much more than keeping score.

🏈 A Community United in Hope
Fifteen-year-old Tusky Valley freshman Mayson White was paralyzed during the team’s season opener on August 22 after making a tackle. Once unable to move or breathe on his own, he has made steady progress at Akron Children’s Hospital, regaining movement in his arms and now breathing almost independently.
Mayson’s determination and positive outlook have inspired those around him. His parents, Justin and Amanda White, continue to share honest updates on his recovery, showing both the difficult days and moments of hope as their son works tirelessly through therapy.
The Tusky Valley community and supporters across the country have rallied behind Mayson. More than $88,000 has been raised on GoFundMe to help his family with medical expenses, while teammates, classmates, and strangers have offered encouragement and prayers.
Mayson’s journey shows how the bonds formed in youth sports go far beyond the game. When tragedy strikes, that same network of players, families, and fans becomes a source of strength, proving the power of a community united by compassion and teamwork.

🏀 Saving Basketball, One Team at a Time
The Cumberland Valley School District is cutting its number of middle school basketball teams in half this year, leaving about 40 student athletes without a place to play. The reduction means fewer chances for students to stay active, build confidence, learn teamwork, and find a sense of belonging during an important stage of growth.
At a time when sports help young people manage stress and avoid risky behaviors, the loss of these teams has deeply affected the community. Cumberland Valley faces funding challenges and receives less revenue per student than most districts in Pennsylvania, putting programs like basketball in jeopardy.
In response, the Cumberland Valley Youth Basketball Association, a local nonprofit, is stepping up to help bridge the gap. More than $20,000 has been raised on GoFundMe to restore all of the middle school teams and ensure every student who wants to play has the opportunity. Additional funds will go toward free registration for students on free or reduced lunch and support for recreational basketball programs.
This effort shows how important it is to keep youth sports accessible to all kids. Beyond competition, athletics teach responsibility, leadership, and perseverance. When a community invests in sports, it invests in the health and future of its children.

🚴♀️ Twin Power Heads to Europe
For twin sisters Abby and Lily Cole of Connecticut, the road to the top of competitive cyclocross is both thrilling and costly. At just 15 years old, the sisters have earned a rare honor: they are two of only six girls in the United States selected to race in Europe this November, competing in Belgium and the Netherlands against some of the fastest junior cyclists in the world.
Reaching this level in an extreme sport like cyclocross takes relentless dedication and significant financial sacrifice. From airfare and equipment transport to lodging and coaching support, the expenses can quickly climb beyond what most families can manage alone. For young athletes like Abby and Lily, opportunities like this can hinge on community generosity and creative fundraising.
To help make their dream a reality, the twins turned to GoFundMe, where supporters far beyond their Connecticut hometown have rallied to contribute. The platform allows them to share their story and connect with people who believe in giving talented young athletes a chance to compete on the global stage.
Their journey reflects both the challenges and the promise of youth sports. With hard work, courage, and the backing of a supportive community, Abby and Lily are proving that even the most ambitious dreams can be within reach, one race and one donation at a time.

⚽ Seven Years Old, Global Dreams
Seven-year-old Emma Barrios has earned an extraordinary opportunity that most young athletes only dream about. Selected by California Youth Sports Management, she has been invited to join an international soccer tour that will take her to Spain and Portugal in the spring of 2026. Her technical skill, determination, and love for the game have already set her apart among players across California and Nevada.
During the two-week trip, Emma will train at two of Europe’s most prestigious academies: Real Betis Balompié in Sevilla and Sport Lisboa e Benfica in Lisbon. The experience will expose her to elite coaching and the high standards of international soccer, giving her a glimpse of what it takes to compete at the highest levels. For a player her age, it represents the kind of early opportunity that can shape a lifelong dream.
For Emma’s parents, Juan and Brenda Barrios, this milestone brings both pride and pressure. Like many families with young athletes, they want to give their child every chance to succeed, even when those opportunities come with significant costs for travel, training, and equipment.
Their story highlights the growing commitment parents make to nurture their children’s talents from an early age. Youth sports have become more competitive and global than ever, and for kids like Emma, dreams of greatness start young. With community support, those dreams can take flight on fields half a world away.

🏆 Perfect Season, Imperfect Funding
The Soldotna Saints Jr. PeeWee football team just completed a historic season, going undefeated and capturing the Alaska Pop Warner State Championship with a commanding 18 to 0 victory over East Anchorage. Their 10 to 0 record and dominant 257 to 12 scoring margin showed what can happen when young athletes commit to teamwork, discipline, and heart. For the first time in more than a decade, a Kenai Peninsula team has claimed the state title, setting a new standard for youth football in the region.
Now, the Saints have earned a chance to take their success even further at the Pop Warner Pacific Northwest Regional Championships in Reno, Nevada. It is a rare opportunity for these players to test their talent against some of the best teams in the western United States and to represent Alaska on a larger stage.
However, the cost of travel, lodging, meals, and transportation is a heavy burden for families who have already given so much to support the season. For many youth sports programs, financial barriers can stand in the way of well-deserved opportunities, no matter how talented or hardworking the players are.
The Saints’ season is a powerful reminder that victory in youth sports is not just about performance on the field. It is also about the ability of a community to come together so that every child who earns a chance to shine can finish their journey and experience the rewards of their hard work.
