Southern Nevada’s Ice Time Crunch
A Las Vegas nonprofit has launched a $15 million fundraising campaign to build a community sports complex featuring two NHL-sized ice rinks and multi-sport indoor facilities. The proposed Las Vegas Community Sports Complex would span 130,000 square feet and aims to address a growing gap between youth hockey participation and available ice time in Southern Nevada.
Since 2017, youth hockey registration in the region has increased 268%, according to USA Hockey figures cited by the foundation. That growth has coincided with the Vegas Golden Knights’ entry into the NHL and the expansion of local rinks from three to seven, including City National Arena and the America First Center. Despite the added capacity, organizers say demand has outstripped supply.
“When you have to train at 5 or 6 in the morning, and they close the track at 11 or 12 at night, and there still isn’t enough time for everyone to play, it’s clear there’s a need,” said Young, a project supporter.
Inside the Proposed Facility
The complex would include two NHL-sized sheets of ice, a 200-by-85-foot artificial turf field for football and lacrosse, seating for approximately 1,500 spectators, and dedicated training space. Additional amenities include retail, concessions, a full-service restaurant, and a rooftop bar.
Programming plans include year-round training, summer camps, community events, and watch parties. The Las Vegas Ice Warriors, a local team, may use the venue as their home facility.
Funding and Timeline
The project is entirely privately funded. Fundraising launched in early November 2025 and is expected to continue for 12 to 18 months. The campaign is seeking both monetary contributions and in-kind donations such as seating, office furnishings, and sports equipment.
The effort is supported in part by the NHLPA Growth Fund, which has committed $3.6 million to youth hockey initiatives connected to the Golden Knights.
A Foundation Built on Access
The initiative is led by Gina Usufzy, founder of Jake Kielb’s Hockey Foundation, a nonprofit named for her son who began playing youth hockey 13 years ago. The foundation works to reduce participation barriers through free equipment, clinics, and scholarships.
“Youth hockey has experienced a spectacular boom, as reflected in USA Hockey’s annual figures, and that’s fantastic, but when there aren’t enough facilities to support that growth, you start to see a decline,” Usufzy said. “There are many kids who want to play but have nowhere to do it. They’re going to look for another sport.”
Looking Ahead
The Las Vegas Community Sports Complex represents a direct response to infrastructure constraints in one of the fastest-growing youth hockey markets in the country. Whether the $15 million goal is met will depend on sustained community and donor engagement over the next 12 to 18 months.
