Izzy Geraci’s path to becoming a world champion in women’s flag football was anything but ordinary. This remarkable young athlete overcame gender biases, shifted her focus, and ultimately found her true calling on the field.
A Girl’s Passion for Football
Growing up in North Ridgeville, Ohio, Izzy Geraci’s love for football began at a young age. Despite her parents’ initial hesitation about a girl playing the sport, she persisted and joined a local youth flag football team, where she excelled as the quarterback.
Choosing Basketball, but Never Forgetting Football
Geraci’s athletic prowess extended beyond football. In high school, her basketball coach advised her to focus on the sport, warning that playing football could jeopardize her chances of earning a college scholarship. Heeding the advice, Geraci shifted her attention to basketball, earning a full ride to Cleveland State University.
Rediscovering Her Passion
Although Geraci’s college basketball experience didn’t quite live up to her expectations, the COVID-19 pandemic presented an unexpected opportunity. With an extra year of eligibility, she transferred to the University of South Carolina Upstate, where she thrived on the court.
The Rise of Women’s Flag Football
Despite her basketball success, Geraci’s true passion remained football. After graduating, she moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, and began exploring the growing world of women’s flag football. Her talent and dedication caught the attention of the U.S. National Women’s Flag Football Traveling Team, and she was soon invited to try out for the national team.
Representing the United States on the World Stage
Geraci’s journey culminated in a thrilling experience at the 2024 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Flag Football World Championships in Finland. With just three weekend training camps under her belt, she helped the U.S. National Team defend their world title, scoring a touchdown in the final game against Mexico.
A Trailblazer for Female Athletes
Geraci’s story serves as an inspiration for young female athletes, shattering the notion that football is solely a male-dominated sport. As a member of the DICK’S Varsity Team, she is paving the way for the next generation of female leaders in the sport.
Aiming for the Olympics
Geraci’s sights are now set on the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where flag football will make its debut. With her unwavering determination and talent, she is poised to represent the United States on the world’s biggest athletic stage.
