A Championship-Level Softball Field Fills a Gap
The West Michigan Sports Commission opened the Alro Steel Championship Softball Field this month, giving Aquinas College women’s softball a permanent home field for the first time in years. The field features synthetic turf, grandstands, lighting, covered dugouts and a press box, and will host youth, amateur and collegiate games and tournaments.
Two additional flexible-use diamond fields also opened this month, equipped with covered dugouts and bleachers for youth and amateur baseball, softball and collegiate play.
WMSC President Mike Guswiler framed the softball field as a step toward gender parity in facility access. “Opening the Alro Steel Championship Softball Field delivers much-needed gender parity for women to play on a championship-level field,” he said.
Pickleball and Legacy Features Still to Come
The next milestone is 20 pickleball courts, including a championship court, with completion timing dependent on temperatures allowing the top court layer to cure. The Rockford Pickleball Club will manage the courts, which will be open to the public and host the Professional Pickleball Association Challenger Series Tournament September 18-20.
The WMSC is also launching a Winning Streak Legacy Program, offering supporters personalized commemorative bricks, benches and picnic tables. A new bronze sculpture by Muskegon sculptor Ari Norris will anchor the Redfield Family Donor Plaza, which will include recognition of former U.S. Ambassador to Italy Peter Secchia, a WMSC founder who passed away in 2020.
A Packed 2026 Tournament Calendar
The expanded complex will host more than 20 travel baseball and softball tournaments from mid-April through September 2026, including 10 by USSSA, seven by Game Day USA and the 2026 North American Fastpitch Association Masters World Series (East) September 10-13.
Originally opening in 2015 with eight fields, the Meijer Sports Complex has hosted over 200 weekend travel tournament events, drawn 8,851 teams and 287,657 visitors, totaling $69.3 million in cumulative visitor spending. The WMSC estimates the expansion will add $1 million in annual visitor spending by accommodating 200 additional teams through enhanced facilities and increased parking.
What the Expansion Means for West Michigan’s Sports Tourism Pipeline
The Meijer Sports Complex expansion is a case study in how regional sports commissions can layer facility upgrades to compound economic returns. Adding championship-caliber softball, flexible diamond fields and pickleball courts under one roof creates year-round programming density that strengthens the region’s pitch to tournament operators and national governing bodies alike.
