The landscape of women’s sports is experiencing an unprecedented transformation, with more young girls than ever aspiring to athletic excellence. According to a recent Women in Sport survey of over 2,600 young people aged 13-24, female athletic ambition has surged from 29% in 2023 to 38% in 2024.
Despite this encouraging trend, a significant gender gap persists. While nearly 60% of boys envision themselves reaching elite sports levels, only 40% of girls share the same confidence. Even more concerning, 40% of girls report a lack of encouragement in their athletic pursuits.
The Paris 2024 Olympics has emerged as a powerful catalyst for change, with two-thirds of girls citing the Games as inspiration for increased physical activity. However, internal barriers remain – nearly one-third of girls still doubt their athletic capabilities.
To address these challenges, Women in Sport has launched the Big Sister project, targeting leisure centers across the UK. Project officer Shereen Charles identifies key obstacles, including:
- Confidence issues among teenage girls
- Fear of judgment
- Limited awareness of sporting opportunities
Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington’s testimony reinforces sport’s transformative potential, describing how swimming provided her with both confidence and community during her teenage years.
