The inaugural Colorado Youth Sports Giving Day campaign has concluded with resounding success, raising an impressive $3.7 million to support youth sports participation across the state. This groundbreaking initiative, spearheaded by the Daniels Fund and Project Play Colorado, in collaboration with numerous youth sports nonprofits, demonstrates the power of community engagement in promoting accessible sports programs for young athletes.
A Statewide Effort to Support Youth Sports
Throughout September, the campaign saw an outpouring of support from individuals, businesses, and community groups across Colorado. Key highlights include:
- Over $2.1 million raised through nearly 3,700 individual donations
- An additional $1.6 million provided in matching funds from sponsors
- More than 175 nonprofit organizations participated in the event
Hanna Skandera, President and CEO of the Daniels Fund, expressed her enthusiasm: “We are truly overwhelmed by the incredible generosity Coloradans have shown during the Youth Sports Giving Day campaign. The outpouring of support for local sports organizations shows just how deeply our community values youth sports and believes in the importance of making them accessible to every young person.”
The Crucial Role of Youth Sports in Child Development
Research consistently highlights the numerous benefits of youth sports participation:
- Improved academic outcomes
- Enhanced self-esteem and mental health
- Better physical health and reduced childhood obesity
- Development of leadership abilities
- Increased likelihood of higher future earnings
Despite these clear advantages, financial barriers often prevent children from accessing sports programs, particularly in income-constrained communities and communities of color. The average cost of participation in organized sports reached $883 per year in 2022, an unaffordable amount for many families.
Impact on Local Organizations
The campaign’s success has had a significant impact on participating organizations:
- YMCA of Metro Denver: Funds raised will help over 1,000 children participate in YMCA Youth Sports who may not have been able to otherwise.
- Special Olympics Colorado: The campaign highlighted their Unified Sports program and raised funds to impact more than 400,000 students, expanding the program to more Colorado schools.
- GJ Blackout in Grand Junction: Funds will support the construction of a future fieldhouse and youth development programming, providing more opportunities for local kids to engage in team sports.
Looking Ahead: Youth Sports Giving Day 2025
Building on this year’s success, the Colorado Youth Sports Giving Day campaign will return in September 2025. This annual event, powered by ColoradoGives.org, promises to continue its mission of expanding access to youth sports programs across Colorado, ensuring that more young athletes have the opportunity to grow, thrive, and benefit from sports participation.
As communities across the state rally behind this cause, the future of youth sports in Colorado looks brighter than ever, promising a healthier, more active, and more inclusive environment for the next generation of athletes.
