Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns is making headlines off the court with his announcement of a groundbreaking initiative to build a state-of-the-art youth basketball training facility in the Dominican Republic. This project, set to be completed by 2026, represents a significant investment in the future of Dominican youth and basketball development in the Caribbean nation.
A Personal Connection
Towns’ commitment to this project stems from his deep-rooted connection to the Dominican Republic through his late mother, Jacqueline Cruz-Towns, who was born there. The NBA star has consistently honored his Dominican heritage, representing the country in international competitions since he was 15 years old, including the recent 2023 FIBA World Cup.

“I’ve been very fortunate to live the American dream,” Towns shared with AP News. “But for me, having a different set of eyes, seeing it through my mother’s eyes and what she had to do to really even feel like an American, I wanted to bring the resources that we have here to there and give kids the opportunity to have the best equipment and the best chances possible to not only make money for their family but also pursue their dreams.”
The Facility and Its Impact
Located in Santiago, Dominican Republic, the facility is being developed through a partnership with GO Ministries and World Youth Clubs. According to the press release, it will “offer unparalleled training and recreational opportunities for young athletes across the region.”
Key features of the facility are expected to include:
- Modern basketball courts
- State-of-the-art training equipment
- Educational resources for young athletes
- Opportunities for community engagement and development
A Legacy of Giving Back
This initiative is not just about basketball; it’s about creating opportunities and inspiring the next generation of Dominican athletes. By providing access to top-tier facilities and training, Towns is opening doors for young people who might otherwise lack the resources to pursue their athletic dreams.
The project also serves as a touching tribute to Towns’ mother, who passed away due to COVID-19 complications in 2020. Through this facility, her legacy of resilience and pursuit of the American dream will continue to inspire young athletes in her home country.
Looking Ahead
As Karl-Anthony Towns prepares for his tenth season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, this project demonstrates his commitment to making a lasting impact beyond the NBA court. The four-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA selection continues to use his platform to give back to his community and honor his heritage.
With the Timberwolves’ training camp set to begin next week, Towns will balance his on-court responsibilities with his off-court philanthropic efforts, embodying the spirit of athletes who strive to make a difference in the world.
The completion of this facility in 2026 will mark a significant milestone in Dominican sports development and serve as a beacon of hope and opportunity for aspiring young athletes across the Caribbean.
