A New Vision for Athletic and Academic Excellence
With the appointment of Steve Sanders as CEO and Ted Meekma as chairman, Spire Academy is setting its sights on becoming the premier destination for young athletes seeking comprehensive development.
Leadership with a Proven Track Record
Steve Sanders: Strategic Visionary
- Former marketing strategist for IMG Academy, FC Barca US Academy
- Committed to creating a differentiated academy model
- Primary focus: Industry-leading academic excellence
“What we’re focused on right now is creating a differentiated model that allows us to catch IMG and surpass them,” Sanders said. “The first thing we need to do is lead the industry in academics. Academically is where sports academies get a bad rap, so if we lead the industry in academics with great athletics, that’s going to be a huge differentiator for families on where they place their kids.”
Ted Meekma: Youth Sports Pioneer
- Founding coach at Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy
- 21-year veteran of IMG Academy leadership
- Deep expertise in sports training and facility development
“Hopefully we’re eliminating a few of the wrong turns we took over the years (at IMG Academy),” Meekma said. “There really hasn’t been anybody that stepped up in a multi-sport situation like Spire to challenge IMG. The academy environment has the capability of doing a very good job of that, if you understand it and are experienced and know how to combine all the elements. The problem with youth sports today is people get so caught up with how many games did you win when you were 13. Academies are not looking at tomorrow, we’re looking at three, four, five years down the road to make sure you get into the right place for you, your sport, education and your career in life.”
Spire’s Innovative Approach
Key Strategic Priorities:
- Academic Excellence
- Challenging the traditional sports academy narrative
- Prioritizing educational outcomes alongside athletic performance
- Comprehensive Student Development
- Expanding to eight sports
- Pursuing gender parity in sports offerings
- Creating unique opportunities for student-athlete growth
- Forward-Thinking Perspective
- Looking beyond immediate game results
- Focusing on long-term student success
- Preparing athletes for future careers and life opportunities
A Critical Perspective on Youth Sports
Meekma emphasizes a crucial insight: “The problem with youth sports today is people get so caught up with how many games did you win when you were 13.”
Spire’s approach challenges this mindset, instead concentrating on:
- Holistic athlete development
- Long-term career potential
- Personalized educational and athletic pathways
The Ultimate Goal
Sanders is clear about Spire’s ambition: “Create a differentiated model that allows us to catch IMG and surpass them.”
Looking Ahead
Spire Academy is not just another sports academy – it’s a comprehensive platform for developing tomorrow’s athletes, scholars, and leaders.
