This is apart of the The Long Game – Building Champions for Life Series:

One thing every coach needs to understand, and far too many still ignore, is this: Every player on your roster is different.
Different personalities. Different confidence levels. Different ways of learning, processing pressure, and handling feedback. Different reasons for showing up every day.
If you have twelve players, you don’t really have one team. You have twelve individual relationships you are responsible for leading, managing, and protecting.
The kid who needs encouragement isn’t the same kid who needs to be challenged. The talkative kid isn’t always the confident one. The quiet kid isn’t disengaged, he may just be processing. And the kid who looks tough on the outside is often the one who needs the most reassurance.
Coaching is not copy and paste. It’s not “this worked for me, so it works for everyone.” That approach isn’t old school, it’s lazy.
Real coaching is the ongoing work of understanding how each player hears feedback, what builds their confidence and what quietly erodes it, when to push, when to pull back, and how to communicate without losing the relationship.
Here’s the part most people miss. Trust is built in the moments outside the lines.
It’s built in the car ride conversations, the practice reps that feel intentional, the way mistakes are corrected, and the words used after failure. Those moments shape how safe a player feels, how coachable they become, and how long they stay connected to the game.
Get that part right and everything else starts to fall into place. Practice plans make more sense. Team meetings land differently. Roles feel clearer. Buy in goes up. And yes, performance usually follows.
This is why I always say development isn’t about running more drills. It’s about understanding who you’re drilling.
I’ll be sharing more soon on practice structure, communication, team standards, and how to build environments where kids actually thrive instead of just survive.
If you’re coaching kids, this matters more than your clipboard.
