This is part two of six of our facility case studies in partnership with The Sports Facilities Companies
Walking through a modern youth sports complex on a busy weekend feels very different from the dusty diamonds and grass fields many of us grew up on. Innovation is helping parents easily avoid lines at busy venue concessions or pro shops, streamlining back-office operations, and creating safer play.
The numbers don’t lie the sports technology market is on a rocket trajectory, projected to surge from $18.85 billion today to $61.72 billion by 2030, with youth facilities driving a significant share of that growth. Behind the figures, though, lies a more human story: next-gen technology is fundamentally transforming how families experience game day and how facilities operate.
Here are some key technology trends shaping the next generation of youth sports complexes, along with several real-world examples.
Paying Made Even Easier
Nobody wants to spend a Saturday morning standing in a concession line while their kid’s game is happening fifty feet away. Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology is reimagining retail at sports and entertainment venues everywhere. Using a combination of computer vision, sensor fusion, and AI, the system lets guests grab a water bottle, a snack, or a team hat and simply walk out. The purchase is automatically charged to their account, and no cashier or self-checkout screen is required.
For youth sports complexes, where families are often juggling multiple kids, packed schedules, and limited time between games, that kind of seamless experience is a genuine quality-of-life upgrade. Fewer lines also mean concession areas feel less chaotic, staff can be reassigned to other guest-facing roles, and revenue capture may improve when we reduce friction[AW1] in the purchase path.

Smarter Operations Behind the Scenes
Planning, work order tracking, and digital checklists are also becoming standard requirements. When everything from turf maintenance to umpire schedules [AW2] is stored in a single system, it reduces errors, shortens response times, and allows staff to spend more time with guests rather than managing clipboards.
Facility management platforms, think of them as the operational backbone of a sports complex, similar to how project management tools like Asana or Monday.com help office teams track tasks and deadlines, but built specifically for physical spaces, are being adopted across the sports and recreation industry to centralize maintenance requests, track asset lifecycles, and flag issues before they become problems.
Platforms like SportsKey are purpose-built for exactly this environment. The software includes maintenance tracking tools that log turf usage, assign work orders to staff, record maintenance activity, and flag fields for rest or repair, helping facilities extend the lifespan of their surfaces and plan proactively rather than reactively. Before adopting a platform like this, many community complexes relied on text messages, emails, and phone calls to coordinate practices and events, a system that works until it doesn’t.
Instead of a work order scribbled on a notepad, a staff member submits a request digitally; it is automatically assigned, and managers can see its status in real time. For a complex hosting hundreds of families on multiple fields or courts on any given weekend, that kind of operational visibility is the difference between a well-run venue and one that’s constantly putting out fires.
AI-Powered Crowd Management & Safety
Large youth sports events can attract thousands of visitors in a single day, which can create a significant [AW3] [AW4] crowd management challenge. AI-powered video analytics platforms, already in use at major stadiums and arenas, are beginning to make their way into multi-field youth complexes. These systems monitor crowds in real time, flag unusual behavior, and can alert staff to potential congestion or safety concerns before they escalate.
Companies like Evolv Technology and Rhombus are leading the way in frictionless threat detection. In the case of Evolv, AI-powered concealed weapons detection systems screen guests as they walk through entry points at a natural pace. There’s no need for visitors to stop, empty their pockets, or create bottlenecks.
Families and groups can enter a venue together at their normal pace, providing a welcoming experience while maintaining a high standard of safety. When a potential threat is detected, the Evolv system provides security staff with visibility into who and where to search via a “red box” on a connected tablet, enabling swift, targeted responses.
Last year, Rhombus released its Rhombus Faces 2.0, which uses AI-powered tools to enable security teams to locate specific incidents immediately with natural language queries and automation.
For youth complexes, the priority is protecting families and creating a welcoming environment. These tools work quietly in the background, giving staff the situational awareness to step in early and prevent incidents.
Biometric Entry and Frictionless Access
On the access side, biometric entry systems are streamlining the movement of athletes, coaches, and credentialed staff through secure areas of a facility. Facial recognition and fingerprint scanning can reduce intense foot traffic at entry points and eliminate the headaches caused by lost badges or forgotten credentials. For complexes that host high-profile tournaments or manage restricted-access training areas, these systems add a meaningful layer of security without slowing anyone down.
These platforms can integrate with facility management software to log attendance, track check-in times, and generate reports on space utilization, data that helps operators make smarter staffing and scheduling decisions.
Some systems also support tiered access levels, meaning a young athlete can be cleared for the main fields while a coach or trainer is automatically granted entry to restricted locker rooms or training facilities. The result is a smoother, more secure experience for everyone on site, with far less administrative overhead.
Supporting Accurate Calls
One of the most talked-about officiating developments is MLB’s Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System, powered by Sony’s Hawk-Eye and T-Mobile’s 5G network. Pitchers, catchers, and batters can now tap their helmets to challenge a call, with results appearing on stadium videoboards nearly instantly. Though the home plate umpire stays in charge, technology simply ensures the closest calls are officiated accurately.
One of the most talked-about officiating developments is Major League Baseball’s Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System, powered by Hawk-Eye tracking technology. Pitchers, catchers, and batters can tap their helmets to challenge a ball-or-strike call, with results displayed on stadium videoboards almost instantly. While the home plate umpire remains in control of the game, the system provides a highly accurate, real-time check on pitch location, helping ensure the most critical calls are as precise as possible.
Down in Pinellas Park, Fla., Michael Nielsen, General Manager of Sprowls Horizon Sports Park plans on using Musco Umpire Assist, an AI-powered automated system designed to track, analyze, and call strikes and balls and strikes for tournaments. He had this to say about the system, “it’s a wonderful technology … Challenges can be addressed to ensure the correct call was made. This enhances the experience for everyone involved.”

As this kind of officiating technology matures at the professional level, youth and amateur leagues are watching closely. For parents and athletes, tools that support accurate calls mean greater trust in the outcome and a better overall experience. They also take some of the pressure off volunteer and part-time officials, a meaningful benefit at a time when youth sports are facing a well-documented shortage of referees and umpires willing to endure sideline scrutiny.
Why Sports Facility Innovation Matters
For communities investing in youth sports complexes, the real payoff lies in what that technology enables. Nielsen has seen that impact firsthand. “Technology has and will continue to enhance the way we serve at Sprowls”. “For our team, it has helped us increase safety, track our sales, and at the same time streamline and optimize various tasks that allow us to focus more on our guests. For our guests, it means visual displays of our menus, easier concessions and pro shop payment exchanges, and an overall positive experience from the moment families arrive to when they leave the park.”
That kind of experience doesn’t happen by accident. The facilities leading the way are the ones making intentional investments, solving real problems for the athletes, families, and staff who show up every weekend. And as these technologies become more accessible and affordable, the bar for what a great youth sports experience looks like will only continue to rise.
