Key Takeaways
- MLB and Phillies Charities, Inc. commit more than $5.5 million across six 2026 All-Star Legacy projects in Philadelphia, with youth baseball access at the center.
- Ashburn Field at FDR Park, a primary home for the Phillies Urban Youth Academy and Nike RBI teams, converts 135,000 square feet of grass and dirt to synthetic turf.
- The field currently loses more than 30 percent of its scheduled events each year to weather, the gap the turf and drainage project targets.
- Since the initiative began in 1997, MLB and host clubs have directed nearly $125 million to host communities.
- Miracle League chapters across Southeastern Pennsylvania receive capital improvement grants for fields serving athletes with disabilities.
A Field Funded by One All-Star Game Gets Its Next Upgrade
Ashburn Field has an unusual origin. It was built in 1998 using funds generated by the 1996 All-Star Game at Veterans Stadium, and today it hosts more than 125 events annually, including games, practices, and college and high school programming. It also serves as one of two primary home fields for the Phillies Urban Youth Academy and Nike RBI All-Star teams that serve city youth.
The problem is the playing surface. More than 30 percent of scheduled events are lost each year to weather. The Legacy investment will convert the 135,000-square-foot grass and dirt field to a high-performance synthetic turf system and add an updated drainage system to reduce flooding. The refurbished field debuts during All-Star Week as an official site for the All-Star Commissioner’s Cup.
“The 2026 All-Star Legacy initiative represents a vital intersection of innovation and community service,” said April Brown, MLB Senior Vice President of Social Responsibility.
Capital Grants Target Accessible Play
The Miracle League builds and supports fields designed for children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities, using rubberized surfaces, fully accessible dugouts, and a buddy system that pairs each player with a volunteer. Legacy dollars will fund capital improvement grants for field upgrades and program enhancements at Miracle Leagues of Southeastern Pennsylvania.
The benefiting chapters were recognized during a June 7 pregame ceremony at Citizens Bank Park that included representatives from Phillies Charities, Inc., Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and First Lady Lori Shapiro.
The Broader Slate: Literacy, Veterans, and Food Access
Beyond the diamond, the projects extend into education and basic services. Tree House Books, a North Philadelphia literacy center founded in 2005, will more than double the size of its children’s library, add a teen center designed for 50 or more teens, and double its dedicated tutoring capacity.
The Veterans Multi-Service Center will replace a non-working elevator and renovate a 5,200-square-foot fifth floor into an “Independence Floor” for mental health services, job fairs, and trades certification. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society will debut a Garden Mobile that delivers more than 20,000 pounds of fresh produce and nearly 300,000 seed starters to communities facing food insecurity. A separate tribute at the Negro League Memorial Park will add four seven-foot statues of Philadelphia Stars players, created by Philadelphia artist Miguel Horn.
Why a Reliable Schedule Is the Real Asset
For facility operators, the Ashburn Field math is the most transferable detail. A field that loses roughly a third of its calendar to weather cannot reliably serve academy schedules, leagues, or rental demand. Turf and drainage convert lost dates into usable programming capacity, the operating metric that determines whether a youth facility can grow participation and revenue.
The pattern also shows how host-city dollars compound. Ashburn Field exists because of a 1996 All-Star Game, and a 2026 All-Star Game is now funding its modernization. For an industry where capital for youth facilities is often the binding constraint, the Legacy model is a working example of major sports events financing durable local infrastructure.
