- The site sits adjacent to 65 acres of vacant land owned by the Vineland Development Corporation, creating potential for a larger development footprint

- Officials cited tourism, commerce, employment, and economic development as the primary drivers behind the investment
South Jersey Secures Over 100 Acres for Sports Destination
Vineland, New Jersey, is moving forward with plans to develop a regional youth sports complex on more than 108 acres of vacant land near the Rowan College of South Jersey campus.
The Vineland City Council voted 5-0 on Feb. 10 to approve the purchase of the property from Inspira Health Network for $6 million. The deal includes 100 acres adjacent to the college campus and an additional 8-acre parcel just over the border in Millville.
The purchase is a joint effort between the city and the Cumberland County Improvement Authority. Under the agreement, Vineland’s share comes to $3 million plus half of closing costs. The council also approved paying half of a $300,000 deposit, which will be credited toward the final sale price.
Location and Development Potential
The site’s appeal goes beyond its size. The property sits beside 65 acres of vacant land owned by the Vineland Development Corporation, with frontage along Delsea Drive. Officials described the combined acreage as “an ideal location” for a regional sports destination. Inspira Medical Center Vineland is located roughly a mile from the site on West Sherman Avenue.
If the project moves forward, the total developable footprint could exceed 170 acres when including the adjacent Vineland Development Corporation land, though no formal plans to combine the parcels have been announced.
Feasibility Study in Progress, No Plans Yet
While the land deal is approved, the project remains in early stages. Sandy Forosisky, Vineland’s director of economic and community development, said a feasibility study by the consulting firm Sports Facilities Companies is underway. The city will determine next steps once that study is complete.
No renderings or detailed plans for the complex have been submitted. The council’s ordinance framed the purchase as a public interest investment, stating that a youth sports facility “would promote tourism, commerce, employment and economic development of the City of Vineland, and would otherwise create economic opportunities for the City and its residents.”
The unanimous vote drew no public comment and no discussion from council members before approval.
What This Means for the Region’s Youth Sports Landscape
At $6 million for 108 acres, the land acquisition represents a relatively low per-acre cost for a project with regional ambitions. South Jersey currently lacks a large-scale, purpose-built youth sports destination, and a complex of this size could draw tournament traffic and recurring travel sports activity to Cumberland County.
That said, land is only the first step. Feasibility findings, facility design, financing, and construction timelines will determine whether this project delivers on its stated economic goals. The involvement of Sports Facilities Companies, one of the more active consulting firms in the youth sports facility space, suggests the city is approaching this with professional guidance.
For operators, sponsors, and brands watching the youth sports facility pipeline, Vineland is a project worth tracking as the feasibility study takes shape.
